VISA/ Permit approval procedures for Indian Visitors

Good News is, Bhutan has a special diplomatic relationship with India, therefore, any Indians with valid Passports or Voter ID doesn’t require a visa to enter Bhutan. However, Indian tourist needs Entry permit from Bhutan Immigration Office to enter into Bhutan.

An entry permit is issued only on your arrival to Bhutan from the entry points.

The Four Entry Points in Bhutan are;

  1. Paro International Airport
  2. Phuntsholing Gate (Western Bhutan)
  3. Samdrup Jongkhar Gate (Eastern Bhutan)
  4. Gelephu Gate (Central Bhutan)

Documents Required for Entry Permit Procedures

  1. Valid passport/ Voter ID (Passport validity should be more than 6 months.)
  2. Family traveling with kids who are below 17 years, without valid Passport/ Voter ID is allowed to enter Bhutan with Birth Certificates and Valid School ID (both should be presented in the case of school going kid).
  3. Two recent passport size photographs for each guest.

Special Route Permit: If you plan to visit places beyond Thimphu and Paro like Punakha, Wangdue, Bumthang, you also need to apply for Special Route Permit. Route Permit is issued only in Thimphu Immigration Office.

After your arrival in Bhutan, you need to go to immigration office in Thimphu during the working days between 9AM-1PM.

Note: Once you complete your tours in Bhutan, you will not be allowed to leave the country without surrendering the Paper Permits in original, issued while entering Bhutan. Even if you manage to escape without surrendering the papers, you will not be allowed to visit Bhutan again in future. (Mind that, your information is punched in Bhutan Immigration System.)

Sounds so simple right? But it is not easier than we think.

In peak seasons, more than thousands Indian Tourists queue up in front of Immigration Office with Entry Permit Application, which would take days and hours of waiting for your turn to come up.

An image below with a phrase from pulkit.me speaks the difficulty.

To get an approved permits, it would take days which will eventually waste your precious time and money. Even more bad luck if you reach the entry points during Off Hours (Weekends and Govt. Holidays).
